Volunteering at Lotus Petals Senior Secondary School was a uniquely heartwarming and enriching experience. The school, surrounded by lush greenery and furnished with modern classrooms, extended a warm welcome to all visitors, teachers, and pupils. The gardener called the plants his “kids” and this added a personal touch to the already vibrant campus. Discipline is sure to impress, covering hundreds of acres and equipped with a marketing lab, hospitality lab, an astronomy lab, and a two-story clean kitchen. The classrooms were equipped with projectors alongside traditional blackboards, creating an ideal blend of cutting-edge modern technology with timeless methods of teaching.
I had the wonderful chance to teach English and Computer Science to the fourth and fifth grade students. In Computer Science, students learned MS Word through a series of active and engaging group lessons. Whereas, English lessons explored the world of Ruskin Bond’s stories, enlarging the students’ vocabulary and expanding their imagination. Their curiosity and eagerness enlivened the mood throughout the session.
Holding a talent show was one such highlight, where students displayed their creativity through rap performances that spread confidence throughout the room. Apart from teaching, I also helped serve lunch and khichdi, a healthy, wholesome, and nutritious meal that looked into the school nurturing care for minds and bodies.
Students’ refreshing spirits and the urge to learn made every moment unforgettable. My days at Lotus Petals were less about teaching and more about nurturing young minds and empowering the community with the same passion for education and compassion. On 4th December 2024, I received Volunteer Excellence Award from the Lotus Petal Foundation on the occasion of International Volunteers Day. It was a recognition not just of my efforts, but of the collective spirit of everyone dedicated to making a difference.
